Both of my parents immigrated very poor to this country. My parents are very correct and religious people. My dad is an incredible example and model as an employee, but I have witness him face prejudice because of his accent. As for the four children, sister is a doctor (and paid around 160k to become one), middle brother is an engineer, and youngest brother in college now. I took out student loans (that I am still paying) to pay for an international study requirement for a degree. Both of my brothers have been arrested and gone through the system for marijuana. I have been arrested for peacefully protesting and witnessed horrific levels of injustice. My mother’s parents recently had to reverse mortgage their home because they couldn’t live on social security. My other living grandmother would literally have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for her “necessary medications” to live if it wasn’t for insurance. I doubt that this is the type of living that my parents and grandparents envisioned when they immigrated here.
